Study Task 03 - Conventions of the Book

100 Natural Wonders of the World

Properties/Conventions:
- Hardback cover for sustainability, as well as to support the grande and awe-inspiring content.
- The format/size of the book is large, so that the reader cannot see or read the full spread of each page in one glance. This is also to reflect the grandeur of the wonders, as it immerses the reader within the pages.
- Full bleed images also are done to this effect, the reader becomes immersed not only in the pages but also the places depicted within them.
- The layout is imagery focused, however there is also a focus on text legibility, framing it in a white opaque box where necessary. There is also smaller 'key fact' sections, to allow fast/skim reading of the book.
- There are a few different typefaces within the book, used consistently. A skinny tall typeface is used for continent names (chapter introductions), a bold thick typeface for place names, and a normal san serif typeface for body text.
- The colours within the book are all bright and vibrant, creating an exciting and fun atmosphere. This is achieved through the bright good quality full bleed photographs. The colour coding for the sections of the book are useful, and provide a quick guide for the reader to get to a section they wish.

Tailor/Add/Manipulate Conventions:
- The use of typefaces throughout the book could be more consistent, especially between the chapter introductions and the place names, as both of the typefaces used for those do not have an obvious purpose/reasoning.
- The body text, placed on top of the images slightly takes away from the readers immersion into the full bleed photographs. Possibly placing the information above/below or to the side of the main subjects within the images would not distract as much.
- The 'key facts' section on each page, although informative and useful for fast/skim reading, also distracts from the images as it stands out and does not flow with the rhythm of the rest of the spread. The black and white image of the place seems unnecessary, and does not communicate anything useful, but rather wastes space.
- The bright yellow on the inside front and back cover are most likely to communicate/reflect the company AA which the book was published by, however this is unclear and the yellow simply feels out of place and inappropriate. The yellow colour could either have been integrated throughout the book, or the AA publishing company represented through different design means.
